December 11 - January 30 Iran's women through 60 years Film history, sociology, politics and popular culture
Rasmus Brendstrup, Cinemateket Danish Film Institute (dfi)
"Woman - life - freedom". That slogan has been used in the Iranian streets since September, and the message is aimed at the incumbent Islamic regime, which has been in power since 1979.
But the protests have historical threads that go further back in Iranian cultural history. Shah-era women on film were not veiled, often on the contrary, but these representations were also debatable and contained gender views that are interesting in relation to today's protests.
As a continuation of November's newer films from Iran, we seek through a series of events to delve into the intersections of film history, popular culture, sociology and feminism from the 1960s to today.
The series offers director visits, talks by researchers and other experts, several Danish premieres, music and much more.

And interestingly, the peak of freedom of expression was right in between – namely around the turn of the millennium under President Khatami. Feminist and director Tahmineh Milani said publicly at the time:
"One of the most important problems we face in today's Iranian society is that we are unable to express our true personality." Both men and women have one life at home and a different set of social rules to adhere to in the public space. "But our women also have two faces inside their homes. What the spouse or in-laws want them to have, and then what is their own.”
