Maziar Parto (November 13, 1933 - January 22, 2014)
Maziar Parto was born on November 13, 1933 in Teheran, Persia.
He was a cinematographer, director and editor, known for Gorg-e bizar (1973), Pakhmeh (1972) and Dozde Siyahpoush (1968).
Maziar Partow was one of the first Iranian cinematographers and had worked as a cameraman on numerous Iranian films. He directed a few movies and edited several more, and was most well known by his title as Director of Photography.
After working for a while at the Ministry of Agriculture, Parto was hired as a cinematographer at the Ministry of Culture and Arts in 1951. There he filmed several short films, including Shaghayegh Suzan, Sotun Paydar, The Sacred Arena / Goad-e Moghaddas (Hajir Dariush), Serpant's Skin / Jeld-e maar (Hajir Dariush), Zagheh Neshin, Air Force, Behzad, Blind Rebellion, Khorasan Folk Dances, But Problems Arose / Vali oftad moshkel-ha... (Hajir Dariush), and Nadamatgah.
Although he has directed several films in his artistic career, as well as advised prominent directors (especially in their early works) on planning, decoupage, and time and economic savings, he is best known for the images he has created.
Maziar Parto also has numerous works in film editing that are influential in their own right and demonstrate his inherent mastery in conveying the rhythm and continuity of images.
When it commes to his style, he is considered a master of handheld cinematography, and his works in this style are among the lasting monuments of Iranian cinema. The short film "Women's Penitentiary" is still used as a classic and educational model of handheld camerawork. His lighting is more sensual and complex than simple and academic. It is difficult to find his light sources in his shots, and if there was a shadow, it was part of the visual illusions he was creating. His art reaches its peak when he combines lighting and handheld movement.
He was married to Ghamar Fakhamy. He was also the uncle of film actress Vishka Asayesh.
He died on January 22, 2014 in California, USA. (Wikipedia)
