A carriage driver who managed to become a taxi driver is in love with his sister-in-law. They were in love when they were young, but both married other people.
Now that they are both widowed, they want to realize their dream and get married. The son of the sister-in-law is opposed to this marriage on principle, but he himself is in love with the carriage driver's daughter.
The uncle and his nephew are going to challenge each other.
The Carriage Driver was restored in 2022 by the French National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image (Centre national du cinéma et de l'image) with the support and permission of Babak Karimi, the director’s son, and is scheduled to be screened at the 36th Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival (Rediscovered Cinema) Film Festival in Bologna, Italy. This is the first Iranian film to be scanned in 5K resolution.
This film was a thoughtful and intelligent work of Iranian cinema in the 1970s, which had a solid structure in terms of subject matter, directing, acting, cinematography, and music. The camera was used carefully and timely, and therefore there are many unbiased and tangible moments in the film.
Before making this film, Karimi produced puppet shows on television and cartoon films in the Culture and Art Ministry, and the series "Peyvand" is also one of his works for television. Karimi introduced a new style in Iranian cinema with "Doroshkhechi", a style that some have compared to Italian neorealism.
With this film, The Carriage Driver depicted the lives of the lower-class people of the city and focused on the relationships of a family. The attention he showed to the details and subtleties made "Doroshkhechi" an unconventional film. The main reason for Karimi's success in this film and several of his other works should be sought in the type of humor he presents. (Wikipedia Farsi)
