Mehdi Missaghieh (1927-1991)
Mehdi Missaghieh (1927-1991, Tehran) was a prominent Iranian movie producer and studio owner.
He entered Iranian cinema in 1953 as an actor and in the same year, he founded Karun Film Studio with the collaboration of others.
Missaghieh Studio was founded by him in 1958, and many films of that time were produced in this studio. He also owned Cinema Capri (now Bahman) and Cinema Farhang. He sold Cinema Farhang to Behrouz Vossoughi before the revolution, and Cinema Capri was confiscated after the 1979 revolution.
Missaghieh Studio was also confiscated and became the now Farabi Cinema Foundation. After these developments, many of the movie scripts in the Missaghieh Studio were approved under the names of others, and the prosecution of the original writers was fruitless.
According to IranWire, Mehdi Missaghieh went to prison after the 1979 revolution for being of Baha'i faith. With the efforts and guidance of Nosrat Karimi, who was in prison with him, he changed his religion to Shia, and this incident was one of the reasons for their release from prison.
After his release, Missaghieh, who was one of the richest producers of Iranian cinema, lived in complete poverty. Because all his property from Missaghieh Studio and Capri Cinema was confiscated. And after a few years of living in poverty, he died and his eventful life ended.
He produced some of the most iconic movies of pre-revolutionary Iran, such as The Deer (Gavaznha), Soil (Khaak), The Postman (Postchi), Sadegh The Kurd (Sadeq Kordeh) and King of The Hearts (Soltane Ghalbha).
His ground-breaking advancements in scene design, new techniques in filmmaking, and a revolutionary use of music and sound were incredibly innovative. These developments notably enhanced the quality of fictional film production, enabling them to compete foreign films at the box office.
At thirty, he independently produced the movie Shab-nishīnī dar jahannam (A Party in Hell, 1956), which was a huge success at the box office in 1957 and was nominated at Berlin International Film Festival.
Missaghieh passed away in exile, yet several screenplays originally planned for production by his studio were later approved and screened by the Islamic Republic. (Wikipedia & Cinema Iranica)
