Kianoush Ayari (May 14, 1951, Ahvaz, Iran)
Born in Ahwaz in 1951. Kianoush Ayari is the most experimental filmmaker of the Iranian cinema.
He started his career in 1970 with the Ahvaz Chapter of Free Cinema Group, and soon made a name for himself in this experimental trend of amateur cinema.
Ayari’s socially analytic viewpoint has created exceptional scenes in his works, portraying the lives of people who are lost in different layers of society.
Ayari is one of the few inimitable Iranian filmmakers whose works are marked with his special brand of cinematic characteristics and elements.
It is easy to distinguish his admirable outlook and signature style even after watching a short scene. Ayari’s cinema is a genuine, extremely Iranian cinema.
Ayari has been active as a director, screenwriter, producer and editor. His professional resume consists of a TV series, a number of shorts and 13 feature films, which have been highly popular in Iran and abroad. --khanehcinema
His first professional movie was Dust Devil / Tanooreyeh Div (1986). His movie Abadani-ha won the Silver Leopard for the best Movie at Locarno Film Festival in 1994.
His most controversial movie The Paternal House was screened at 69th Venice Film Festival but yet to be screened publicly in Iran as of december 2016 but was screened at a few cinemas in United States of America.
Mehdi Hashemi, one of the best actors of Iranian theatre and cinema has played the main actor role in his movies for the last two decades, including: Thousand Eyes (TV Series), Roozegar-e Gharib (TV Series), The Paternal House and his latest movie Kanape.
