Suicide after "Freedom" Iranian Film Critic Commits Suicide After Being Released From Detention
Iran International January 8, 2023 #IranProtests
Iranian film critic and director, Mohsen Jafari-Rad, who had been arrested during anti-government protests a few weeks ago, committed suicide after being released.
Reports over the past week have spoken of political prisoners committing suicide after release from detention. Some suspect that strong drugs are being administered to detainees that might be causing suicidal tendencies once they stop using them after their release.
Hoshang Golmakani, the editor in chief of "Film-e Emrouz" magazine said Sunday that Jafari-Rad took his own life.
"This morning, our former colleague Mohsen Jafari Rad, a critic and writer who had turned to making films and working with television in the last few years, committed suicide by taking some pills at the age of 36."

Following the announcement of the death of Mohsen Jafari Rad, a film critic and filmmaker, Hoshang Golmakani, the editor in chief of "Today's Film" magazine, announced the arrest of Mr. Jafari Rad a few weeks ago during the Karaj City protests and announced the cause of his death as "SUICIDE".
Mr. Golmakani wrote on his Instagram on Sunday, January 8: "He was arrested a few weeks ago during the unrest in Karaj, while he was going home. And when he was able to finally explain his identity and profession after about two weeks, and it turned out that he was not present at the demonstrations, he was released, but..."
We offer our condolences to his wife and other survivors on the death of Mohsen.

The director of the film magazine does not give any further explanation about this, and official news agencies such as ISNA only reported his death on Sunday morning.

Jafari Rad was born in 1986 and graduated with a master's degree in filmmaking. He wrote for many years in film publications and magazines, especially the magazine "Today'S Film".

At the same time, as a journalist and film critic, he collaborated with more than twenty other general and specialized publications and started making short fiction and documentary films since 2008.
In the course of the suppression of the "Woman Life Freedom" protests, which began on 21 September and continues, in addition to the deaths of around five hundred protesters, thousands of citizens have also been arrested, and no accurate statistics and information about them have been published.
