Mini biography
Pablo Larraín (August 19, 1976, Santiago, Chile)
Pablo Larraín Matte (19 August 1976 in Santiago, Chile) is a Chilean film director and screenwriter.
He is known for feature films such as the Academy Award-nominated films No (2012), Neruda (2016), Jackie (2016), Spencer (2021) and El Conde (The Count). He has also co-directed one TV series.
His latest film No was screened in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Art Cinema Award.
No has also been selected as the Chilean entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, making the January shortlist.
In 2017, Larraín and his brother Juan de Dios co-produced Sebastián Lelio's A Fantastic Woman, which was the first Chilean film to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2021, Larrain directed the psychological romance horror miniseries Lisey's Story.
“We have a problem with fiction. Or maybe they’re simply upset that it’s me making the film, a director coming from a family who is not in the left. But stories are there for all of us. These virulent reactions are so Chilean and so exhausting. There are people who believe they own certain events and thus have moral authority to talk about them.”
Larraín is the son of former Minister of Housing & Urban Development Magdalena Matte and senator and Independent Democrat Union president, Hernán Larraín.
Pablo Larraín Matte was born in Santiago, Chile, the son of law professor (and later Independent Democrat Union senator) Hernán Larraín, and Magdalena Matte, Sebastián Piñera's former minister of Housing and Urbanism.
He studied audiovisual communication at the University for the Arts, Sciences, and Communication in Santiago.
In 2003, Larraín co-founded with his brother, Juan de Dios Larraín, the production company Fábula, through which he develops his cinematic and advertising projects and supports the work of emerging international directors.
Larraín directed his first feature film Fuga in 2005. It was released in March 2006 and achieved international acclaim with several prizes at international film festivals, including the Cartagena Film Festival and the Málaga Film Festival.
In 2008, he released his second feature-length film, Tony Manero, about a serial killer with an obsession for John Travolta's character in Saturday Night Fever, the film premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, where it was part of the Directors' Fortnight section.
His next film, Post Mortem, was released in 2010 and centers on a coroner's assistant during the days of 1973 coup that brought Pinochet to power. The movie premiered at the 67th Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion in the official competition section.
El Conde ('The Count') is Pablo Larraín's 2023 black comedy horror film written by Larraín and Guillermo Calderón. It is a satire that portrays Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet as a 250-year-old vampire seeking death. The film stars Jaime Vadell, Gloria Münchmeyer, Alfredo Castro and Paula Luchsinger.
El Conde premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on 31 August 2023. It will be released on Netflix on 15 September 2023, four days after the 50th anniversary of the 1973 coup d'etat, in which Pinochet seized power.
