After the death of her brother, Rose Sayer must flee German East Africa and finds the only safe conveyance left: a dilapidated river steamboat.
The ship is run by the grumpy and usually drunk Charlie, who goes toe to toe with the imperious, straight-laced Rose throughout their perilous journey.
