The Legend of Love | Afsaneh-e eshgh | Tcherike-ye Hooram (2000)
Synopsis
Khazar starts a journey through the mountains of Kurdistan to find her beloved, Hooram. She has to pass through the tunnel of rituals and fabulous beliefs of this ancient land.
Years ago, Hooram quit medical college to work in a clinic and help the war-torn people of his hometown.
Khazar's only guide on this journey is a cassette Hooram left her on which he sings a Kurdish love song, lyricizing the reasons for his departure.
The film is a journey to the world of signs. It passes through the high mountains to penetrate, literally and metaphorically, into the land of the Kurds and their mythological beliefs.
The Legend of Love continues my exploration of fictional documentaries. In its telling of a melodramatic story, this film illustrates the culture customs of the ancient land of Kurdistan.
I wanted to depict the tragedy of the Kurdish people along with the beauties of their culture.
We should note that imperialistic manipulation has caused traditional Kurdistan to be divided among four countries: Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran.
And this has caused instability, war and fratricide in the region. The Legend of Love invites all the Kurds to beauty and peace. -- Farhad Mehranfar
***
"Legend of Love" is one of the few national films respecting the Kurdish people and culture.
Most films made in Kurdestan have just used the place as a setting without paying much attention to the Kurdish feelings, culture, and needs.
But Legend of Love not only addresses the general audiences in Kurdestan but also respects the Kurdish culture. I was obsessed with this film for twenty years.
As such, it can be of interest to an idealistic generation that has sustained mortal blows in political, emotional, and idealistic challenges over the past twenty years.
I did not strive to make a film that would drive a wedge between me and my fellow countrymen or that would be appealing to the festivals only.
Anyway Legend of Love proves the falsity of such claims. -- Netiran
