Sir Michael Caine will join Johnny Depp and Ethan Hawke at this year’s film festival in Karlovy Vary, and receive the festival’s greatest honor: the prestigious Crystal Globe, awarded for contribution to world cinema.
While the Covid-19 pandemic has made things difficult for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival over the past two years, organizers have managed to get together an impressive lineup of acclaimed actors for this year’s edition, running from August 20-28.
Sir Michael Caine will join Johnny Depp and Ethan Hawke at this year’s film festival in Karlovy Vary, and receive the festival’s greatest honor: the prestigious Crystal Globe, awarded for contribution to world cinema.
Karlovy Vary organizers will present Caine with the Crystal Globe at the festival’s opening ceremony on Friday, August 20.
Caine will also present a screening of his latest film, Best Sellers, at the festival on Saturday afternoon. In Best Sellers, the actor stars as an aging author who sets out on one last book tour, alongside Cary Elwes and Aubrey Plaza.
The acclaimed actor has won two Academy Awards, both for Best Supporting Actor, for Hannah and Her Sisters and The Cider House Rules. He has been nominated for an additional four Oscars, forAlfie, Sleuth (1972 version), Educating Rita, and The Quiet American. Along with Laurence Olivier, Jack Nicholson, and Paul Newman, Caineis the only actor to be nominated for an Oscar in five different decades.
Caine famously did not pick up his Oscar for Hannah and Her Sisters in person, as he was in the Bahamas filming Jaws: The Revenge at the time. When later asked about the Jaws sequel, Caine reportedly said "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific!"
More recently, Caine has memorably featured in many of director Christopher Nolan’s films, including Tenet, Interstellar, Inception, and The Dark Knight trilogy.
Caine also starred in Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth, which won the Audience Award at the 2015 edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and was the very first film to be distributed in the Czech Republic by KVIFF Distribution.
Caine stars in the new Czech film Medieval, a Jan ®i¾ka biopic starring Ben Foster as the Prague hero that was reported to be the most expensive Czech film ever made. Medieval began filming in September 2018, but three years later has yet to be released.
