THE PHOENIX (Simorgh) is a short film Written & Directed by Nora Niasari. It follows an exiled Iranian actor who teaches drama inside an Australian detention centre.
Exiled Iranian actor Mr Farid teaches theatre to reluctant asylum seeker teenagers inside an Australian Detention Centre. When the fate of the kids is unknown, he attempts to restore their lives but makes an unexpected discovery of his own.

The Phoenix has achieved great success, screening at many Australian and International Film Festivals, including the 64th Melbourne International Film Festival (Niasari was the 2015 MIFF Accelerator Participant), the 14th International Student Film & Video Festival of Beijing Film Academy, 2015 Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival, 12th Human Rights Film Festival of Barcelona, 14th Dhaka International Film Festival, 4th Nepal Human Rights International Film Festival, 4th Persian Film Festival, 5th Silk Road Film Festival, 24th International Student Short Film Festival of Cergy Pontoise and the 9th Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival.
The Film screened at Cinema Nova, during Melbourne's 2016 Refugee Week and the 2017 Colourfest, Australian Films Showcase.
In addition, the film has received the following awards:
The 24th International Student Short Film Festival of Cergy Pontoise (Second Prize Winner - Student Film), the 2015 Australian Director’s Guild Awards (Nominated - Best Direction in a Student Film) and the 2014 Victorian College of the Arts – 46th Annual Graduate Film School Awards (Winner - Cinema Nova Award & New Voices Award).
