Anti-government protests in Iran, launched in September following the death of Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in the custody of Iran's morality police, have passed their 100th day, even as demonstrators have been met with widespread arrests, brutal violence by police and executions.
The Human Rights Activists News Agency reports thousands of protesters have been arrested and more than 500 protesters have been killed so far, including 69 children. At least 26 more demonstrators are facing execution.
As calls grow for the United States and the international community to respond to Iran's brutal crackdown, President Biden has hinted attempts to restore the Iran nuclear deal may be dead.
We're joined by Hadi Ghaemi, executive director and founder of the Center for Human Rights in Iran, and Nahid Siamdoust, a former journalist who is now Middle East and media studies professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
Despite Crackdown, Anti-Government Protests May Grow into "Nationwide Revolution"
The situation in Iran is "critical" as authorities tighten their crackdown on the continuing anti-government protests after the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the so-called morality police.
United Nations human rights officials report Iranian security forces in Kurdish cities killed dozens of protesters this week alone, with each funeral turning into a mass rally against the central government. "The defiance has been astounding," says Middle East studies professor Nahid Siamdoust, who reported for years from Iran, including during the 2009 Green Movement, and calls the protests a "nationwide revolution."

#DemocracyNow: Why Protests in Iran Are Not Slowing Down
Protesters in Iran are continuing to demand justice for Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died in the hands of the so-called morality police, as well as envisioning a political future beyond the Islamic Republic. The Norway-based group Iran Human Rights estimates at least 154 people have been killed since the protests began.
"We saw women, really, what it seemed like for the first time, putting their bodies in direct confrontation with the police," says Nilo Tabrizy, writer and video journalist at The New York Times.
"Today's movement is not calling for reform. Today's movement is calling for a new vision of politics … with women at the helm of it," says Narges Bajoghli, professor of anthropology and Middle East studies at Johns Hopkins University.

It’s a fascinating discussion about why this uprising is different from anything that’s come before, what comes next for the people of Iran, and what the U.S. can do to help. (The bad news is it involves Elon Musk.)
