Lingui, The Sacred Bonds (2021)

Synopsis

On the outskirts of the capital of Chad, determined single mother Amina works tirelessly to provide for herself and her 15-year old daughter Maria.

When Amina discovers Maria is pregnant and does not want a child, the two women begin to seek out an abortion, condemned by both religion and law.

It is not easy to be a single mother in Chad, where the religious patriarchy will decide everything. Amina knows all about it.

The men look down on the unmarried women, so when her 15-year-old daughter Maria suddenly becomes pregnant, she is faced with an impossible choice between a life at the bottom of society - or an illegal abortion.

In the fight against both time and the law, mother and daughter must stand together for the right to decide over their own bodies.

Mahamet Saleh Haroun is a masterful narrator with a very special ability to delve into the essentials of his gripping story.
