CANNES 2018 Opening Everybody Knows to open the Cannes Film Festival
by Fabien Lemercier, cineoropa 05/04/2018
The film by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi will be screened in competition as the opening movie of the 71st Cannes Film Festival
Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem in Asghar Farhadi's 'Everybody Knows'
Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi is about to take part in the Cannes competition for the third time, but this time he will also have the privilege of opening the 71st Cannes Film Festival (8-19 May) with his eighth feature, Everybody Knows.
The movie, which was shot in Spain and is in the Spanish language, is toplined by Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Argentina’s Ricardo Darin. Also among the cast members are Eduard Fernández, Bárbara Lennie and Inma Cuesta.
The story, written by the director, follows Laura, who lives in Buenos Aires with her husband and their children. She travels with her family from Argentina to the village where she was born, on a Spanish vineyard, to attend her sister's wedding, but unexpected events lead the gathering towards a crisis that exposes the hidden past of the family.
As a reminder, Farhadi’s filmography also comprises About Elly (Best Director Award at Berlin in 2009), A Separation (Golden Bear and Silver Bears for Best Actor and Best Actress at Berlin in 2011, Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film in 2012 and nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay) and two Cannes-awarded movies: The Past (Best Actress Award in 2013) and The Salesman (Best Actor Award and Best Screenplay Award on the Croisette in 2016, before going on to scoop the Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film in 2017).
Produced by Alexandre Mallet-Guy for Paris-based outfit Memento Films Production and by Alvaro Longoria for Madrilenian firm Morena Films, Everybody Knows was co-produced by France 3 Cinéma, Italy’s Lucky Red and Rai Cinema, and by Spain’s Untitled Films AIE.
The feature, which was also backed by Eurimages, the ICAA, Canal+, Ciné+, Movistar, Cofinova and Indéfilms, will be released in French theatres on 9 May by Memento, which is also in charge of the international sales.
Interestingly, the film has already been acquired for Germany and Austria (Prokino), Latin America (Leda Films), Japan (Longride), the Benelux (Cinéart), China (Hi-Show), Greece (Seven), Hong Kong (Golden Scene), Hungary (Mozinet), Israel (Lev), Poland (Gutek), the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Aerofilms), Russia and the Baltic states (Mauris Films), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Switzerland (Frenetic), Taiwan (Movie Cloud), Turkey (Zeyno Films) and the countries of the former Yugoslavia (Megacom).
