Mohammad Shirvani (1973, Tehran, Iran )
Mohammad Shirvani is a contemporary Iranian visual artist, film director, researcher, script writer and producer.
He was born in Tehran in 1973, leaving his education in the field of Fine Art at Tehran University to follow his dream, cinema.
Ever since his first movie ‘The Circle’ which was chosen by the film critics at the Cannes festival in 1999, he has dedicated himself to cinema full time.
He is the pioneer of the alternative experimental cinema in Iran and has been widely presented at more than 300 international film festivals including; Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, Toronto, Tribeca, Pusan, Rotterdam, etc.
In addition, his films have been broadcasted on the significant channels such as, ZDF, CHANNEL4, NHK, LINK TV, etc. This is while none of his works have been presented in his motherland.
His short films have been screened and won prizes at many festivals.
His feature debut Navel (2004) was also screened in Rotterdam. Fat Shaker is his second feature.
His first short, ‘The Circle’, was in competition at the 1999 ‘Critics’ Week’ selection in Cannes.
Since then he has worked passionately on shorts, documentaries and features which have been screened at festivals around the world.
He was for several years President of the Independent Iranian Short Film Association (ISFA) and his passion continues.
