The film produced by Annika Rogell for Tangy is also nominated for the 2023 Nordic Council Film Prize.
Alami said: “We are very proud and honoured to be the Swedish submission to the Oscars this year! I am personally extra proud of our fantastic actors and our team.”
Petter Mattson, head of the International Department of the Swedish Film Institute and chairman of the Oscar Committee added: ”Milad Alami's film contains so much of what constitutes a strong drama portrayed on film. The personal fate, the current political themes, the placement of the story in a context that makes these become so much clearer. This paired with excellent acting and stylish and effective storytelling makes Opponent a very worthy Oscar candidate.”
Opponent world premiere are the Berlinale Panorama section this year and went on collecting several international awards such as a special jury prize at Seattle and a Golden Gazelle-best feature at the Persian Int’l Film Festival. The drama was released in Sweden via TriArt. Indie Sales handles world sales.
The film is among five outstanding films vying for the 2023 Nordic Council Film Prize. The final winner will be announced October 31st in Oslo.
