Mehrshad Karkhani (1964, Tehran, Iran)
Born in Tehran in 1964, Mehrshad Karkhani is an Iranian director, writer, actor and photographer.
As a movie director Karkhani is known for making movies such as Loose Rope (2008), National Alley (2011) and Ekbatan (2012).
He started his film career in 1991 as photographer of "Hoor On Fire" (HOor Dar Atash) and for this movie he received a Crystal Simorgh for the best picture from the 12th Iranian Fajr Film Festival.
Among his other works as photographer, there are films such as Setaregan-e khak, Feast, Under the Moonlight, Boutique, Ashke Sarma, It's Winter.
His first experiences with filmmaking resulted in directing three short fiction films titled "Yadhay-e Molayem" (Gentle Memories), "Darigha Taraneh", "If the weather was sunny". In 2006 Karkhani shot his first movie "Gonah-e Man" (My Guilt). It was screened at the 25th Iranian Fajr Film Festival and released two years later.
In 2006, he finished his second feature film "Risman-e Baz" (Loose Rope), which was noticed by critics at the Iranian Fajr Film Festival. Loose Rope was also nominated for the best film and best director awards in the Iranian Cinema Writers and Critics Festival and won the Best Supporting Actor award from the Iranian Alliance of Motion Picture Guilds (Khaneh Cinema) Festival.
"Loose Rope" has participated in the 16th Hamburg Film Festival in 2008, the 52nd London Film Festival in 2008.
