Manouchehr Vossough, born Abbas Rezayi Vossough, was an Iranian actor and film producer.
Vossough was born in Ray St. in Tehran, Iran on 4 February 1944. After 1979, he moved to London, England, where he died from cancer, on 27 February 2022, at the age of 78.
Abbas Rezaei Vossough (4 February 1944 - 27 February 2022), known as Manouchehr Vossough, was an Iranian actor. He was one of the most prolific Iranian actors before the 1979 revolution, his first cinematic appearance was in Jahelha va Zhigoolha (1964) directed by Hossein Madani and became famous for his role in Charkh-e bāzigar (1968).
He completed his education in Badr High School. He was interested in sports since he was a teenager and was active in athletics. At this time, Manouchehr turned to acting in the theater together with Saeed Ghaem Maghami and performed theater for organizations such as Scouting and Iran's Shir O Khorsheed Red Sun Jamiat. With the formation of "Kaveh Theater Group" by Saeed Qaim-maqami, Manouchehr Vossough also started his cooperation with Iran's national television by performing live theaters with this group.
Until the end of 1961, Manouchehr went in front of the camera in popular movies alongside famous actors. Haq va Nahaq, Zarkharid and Zhakhm Khanjare Rafiq were among the last films he starred in before the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, he was banned from working in cinema. Therefore, he continued acting in Lalezar theaters. But after some time, along with some other artists, he was summoned to the Revolutionary Court of Evin prison and released after being interrogated and giving an undertaking that they would not do anything against the standards of Islam. But he was never allowed to continue his artistic activities.
After living in Iran for 5 years and being unemployed, Manouchehr Vossough secretly went to Pakistan and immigrated to England from there. In the first years of his arrival in London, he acted in the Akhundi variety show, produced by Reza Fazeli and directed by Reza Sarkoub. In an interview with the BBC, Vossough said that the reason for emigrating from Iran was the desperation to continue his activities due to the negative statements of Seyyed Mohammad Khatami, the then Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, about actors before the revolution. After suffering from cancer for several months, Manouchehr Vossough finally died on February 27, 2022 at the age of 78 in London.
