Ali Abbassi (1943, Tehran, Iran)
Ali Abbassi (born 1943 in Tehran) is an Iranian cinema producer, writer and publisher.
Ali Abbasi is known for having produced Hasan Kachal (1970), Hasan siah (1972), Bot (1976) and Souteh Delan (1978).
Abbassi was one of the most active producers of pre-revolutionary Iranian cinema. Abbas Kiarostami, Amir Naderi, Massoud Kimiai – some of the most famous filmmakers initially worked for Abbassi’s “Payam Production”. He left the country in 1984 when the new Islamic government confiscated many archives and he feared they would be destroyed.
He was a graduate of economics and administrative sciences from Tehran University.
Abbassi has been writing in Iranian publications since 1959, and was one of the publishers of Movie Star magazine along with Khosro Shahdoosti from 1964 to 1966.
Book publication
In 2017, the book “Ali Abbassi Presents: 30 Years of Nightmare”, written by Ghasideh Golmakani, was published by Cheshmeh Publishing House. This book is more than an account of Abbassi's memoirs, it is the account of the "burning of the negatives" of his films and his subsequent migration. In addition, a documentary film called Sibhaye Derakhte Aloo, directed by Ghasideh Golmakani, was made about his life.
