The story takes place in the 18th century when the Danish King Frederik V declared that the wild moors of Jutland should be tamed and colonized in order to spread civilization and collect more taxes for the royal house.
But no one dared to obey the decree, as the heath was considered to be infested with ravenous wolves and muggers.
But then in 1755, after his career in the Danish military, the lonely soldier Ludwig Kahlen rode into the heath because he knew that he could achieve wealth and honor here.
