The screening of the film was cancelled in the city of Mashhad.
On February 4, 2020, Soheil Beiraghi published a note on Instagram announcing the cancellation of the film's screening in Mashhad and said that no specific reason had yet been given for its cancellation.
He said in part of this note:
In Mashhad, they stopped the screening of "Popular"! I called everyone and they all said, "They told me from above!!" Where is this "above"?! I wish I could talk to this guy! He has to answer how he decides a movie he hasn't seen yet can not be seen by others and deletes it. Why doesn't he show himself from this "above"?

This film is the third film in a trilogy by Soheil Beiraghi about Iranian women from three different generations. The central characters of the previous two films were played by Leila Hatami and Baran Kosari, who respectively represented the women of the seventies and eightties, now the main character of "Popular" is a woman from the sixties, played by Fatemah Motamed-Arya.
Beiraghi himself denies this as beeing intentional. According to him, he never decided to make a feministic or female trilogy, and that if it appear like a trilogy, is unconsciously and based on circumstances.
