The Sacred Arena | Goad-e Moghaddas (1962) (Doc. Short)
Synopsis
Hajir Dariush's first film, a documentary made in 1962 about "Zoorkhaneh," a ceremonial sport of Iran.
In order to illustrate his favorite subject, Dariush gathered the athletes of Bank Melli Club and asked Bagher Mahdieh for help in regulating sports movements, and Kazem Jabbari to supervise the beat and singing.
Maziar Parto's work with the video camera is particularly visually appealing, especially in the moments when he shows the Zoorkhaneh ring from above and the athletes' play with the swimming board and when the "subjective camera" hovers in the middle of the ring instead of the athlete.
The Sacred Arena achieved great success, such as receiving an honorary diploma from the Marseille Tourism Film Festival and a silver medal from the Cinema Folk Film Festival in Cepna, Italy.
An excerp of Documentary naration of the Holy Ghod, written by Bahman Farsi: The present time, Tehran and the same story; and also the intervals (distances): yesterday, today, tomorrow. A figure from the leaders of an ancient mystic path; and the path, although it has taken on forms in the midst of centuries, remains steadfast in its ancient foundation...
