SHEEPLE | The Little Rusty Brains (2018) A true master class of acting!
Tiit Tuumalu, poff.ee 15 nov. 2018
Houman Seyedi's fifth feature length film
Sheeple, Comedy-Drama, Color, 100min, Iran, Production Year: 2018
The story of a gang of drug dealers in the south of Tehran who has sheltered many youngsters and orphans from the streets.
Shahin and Shakoor who are brothers are leading the gang but when it is collapsed creates a crisis in their family and their lives.
What, really, an Iranian gangster drama? It’s true, we’re not joking. It can be called that. There is even a hint of "The Sopranos", although the action is set in a Teheran slum.
It is also something very special in the context of Iran – in a country where 150 films are made a year. The overwhelmingly strong audience award from the national film competition of the Fajr Film Festival only goes to prove that.
Shahin, a loud-mouth fellow adopted years ago, is trying to establish his authority in a family run by the iron hand of his drug lord brother. When a phone-filmed video of their sister showing her hair to a strange man – a grave sin in that society – starts circulating, things get really crazy. The family’s honour becomes more important than any person. Can a sheep who has obeyed the shepherd’s crook all his life even become anything more – someone who decides on his own life and does not need a shepherd? How does the herd mentality actually influence our life?
A film with serious social undertones, in which Navid Mohammadzadeh, who visited Tallinn last year, pulls off a transformation move for the likes of which Oscars are awarded. His contradictory character inspires both anger and pity – a true master class of acting!
This is worth casting aside any possible prejudice you might have towards Iranian film should be cast aside – you can only gain from this film! (Tiit Tuumalu)

Hooman Seyedi has been one of the most significant figures in Iranian cinema of the past couple of decades. Looking at the actor’s career sphere, undoubtedly, the progress of his success is slowly but steadily; Seyedi’s eclectic and clever choices in recent years has won the audiences’ attention and has left its blueprints on their mind.
His performance in a short but memorable role in “Chaharshanbeh Souri” (Fireworks Wedensday) by Asghar Farhadi, alongside the great actors of Iranian cinema, his appearance in “Barefoot in Paradise” by Bahrain Tawakoli, winning his first Crystal Simorgh for Best Actor at the 11th Fajr Film Festival were a few of the signs of a talented young actor on the brink of stardom.
With his first directing experience “Africa,” he was able to attract a positive review of the film critics; furthermore gained the Crystal Simorgh for the best director of the 20th Fajr Festival. The “Thirteen” was his second box-office success and the winner of numerous international awards as well as the Crystal Simorgh, the best director of the 32nd Fajr Festival.
In Later years, what distinguishes Seyedi from his other colleagues is his directing style, tendency to use complex decoupage and various non-classical framings, as seen in films such as “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and “Sound and Fury" (Khashm va Hayayoo).
Undoubtedly, Seyedi’s new film “The Rusty Little Brains” is the new striking project that was very warmly received at Fajr Film Festival.
