Lai, Francis |
Francis Lai (April 26, 1932, Nice, Alpes-Maritimes, France)
Francis Lai, now known as a popular musician, was born on April 26, 1932.
Born in Nice, Alpes-Maritimes, France, Lai has become famous for his composing – particularly of film scores.
Lai was able to find success after leaving his home in Nice to join the music scene in Paris.
He left his home during his twenties. At the time, the most popular music scene in Paris was the Montmartre music scene.
Montmartre is a district in Paris that is home to many nightclubs and is well-known for its music scene and artistic past.
Many famous artists had studios in the area, including Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali. The district is also famous as the home of the Catholic Church where the founding of the Jesuit order of the priests was founded.
During his time in this artistic section of Paris, Lai was able to work on his music and eventually met Claude Lelouch.
It was Lelouch who would introduce Lai to the world of writing music for films. This is the area in which Lai would later find his greatest success.
Lai has contributed to many musical compositions throughout his lifetime, including many film scores. The films that he has composed scores for have been incredibly well-known, popular films that are beloved by critics and audiences alike. He has even won many awards for the film scores that he composed.
The first film for which Francis Lai composed the score was a French film titled “Un Homme et un Femme,” which in English means “A Man and a Woman.” The film was released in 1966 and was a huge success. It was even a major success in the international markets, and earned Lai his first Golden Globe Award nomination. The film itself won many Academy Awards and was incredibly commercially successful.
Perhaps the most famous score composed by Francis Lai was the score for the movie “Love Story,” released in the 1970s. Based on the book of the same name by Erich Segal, “Love Story” became an international sensation and even inspired a fashion trend based on the hat worn by the female lead in the movie.
For Lai, “Love Story” and the score that he composed was an incredible success. He won two major awards for the score that year – the Academy Award for Best Music, Original Score and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for the film.
The score was not only a huge hit with the critics and those who vote on major awards such as the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, but was also a huge hit with the general music-listening public.
The soundtrack album and the film’s theme both had success on the charts. The soundtrack album, with the score composed by Lai, hit number two on the Billboard charts.
After the worldwide success of “Love Story,” Lai continued to have success with the movie. He composed the score for the film’s sequel, titled “Oliver’s Story.”
In addition to the “Love Story” film score and its related musical compositions, Lai has written for television programs. Perhaps his best known composition for a television score is the theme music for the British documentary series “Panorama.” --francislai.net
