"The Daughters of Old Shiraz" is not just a film; it is a picture of the power of women, the unity of people and a deep love for cultural heritage.
In its now third international appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, this feature-length documentary by Asal Setayesh, which took about three years to make, will continue its successful path at international festivals, this time in cooperation with the Iranian Independent Filmmakers Association, (iifma) in the sales section of the prestigious Cannes Film Market - Marché du Film and will be introduced to global producers and investors.
This documentary, which was accepted in its first international appearance in the main competition section of the New York Architecture & Design Film Festival, was also shown in its second appearance in the main competition section of the Capri Festival in Italy.
"The Daughters of Old Shiraz" is about a group of young women working on the restoration and reconstruction in the historic fabric of Shiraz when news broke that the complete destruction of the historic area had been approved by high-ranking officials of the country. This prompted the girls, with the help of a film director, Asal Setayesh, to take action to prevent the destruction. After much struggle, they and the people of Shiraz succeeded in having the historic fabric nationally registered, which ultimately prevented the destruction of this enduring historical heritage of the city.
This social and cultural movement faces many resistances and challenges, but ultimately, with continuous follow-up and widespread support from the people of Shiraz, they succeeded in nationally registering the historical fabric; an event that led to the prevention of the destruction of this valuable part of Shiraz's urban and historical identity.
The documentary "The Daughters of Old Shiraz / Baft Girls" is not only a visual narrative of an old city's cultural heritage, but also a reflection of the will, social awareness, and power of young Iranian women in the face of urban challenges and unfair decisions in the field of architecture and heritage protection.
This documentary work, from a human and social perspective, artistically depicts the status of women, popular participation, and the importance of historical contexts, and now, by participating in the Cannes Film Festival, it has taken another step towards being seen on a global level."
