The killing of filmmaker Javad Ganji and the summoning of filmmakers protesting the killing of people
Jafar Panahi, Instagram January 20, 2026
On January 20, directors Majid Barzegar and Behtash Sanaeiha were separately summoned and harshly interrogated for hours over their recent joint statement condemning state violence and repression.
More cinema professionals are expected to face summons soon, with heavy judicial cases already opened against them. State media report that, per Tehran prosecutor’s orders, files have been built against 10 House of Cinema signatories, 15 prominent actors and athletes, and ~60 cafés allegedly tied to protests.
Fars News (IRGC-linked) states that some assets have been seized and convicts will be forced to pay for public damages. The regime is attempting to erase its massacre of protesters by intimidating artists, fabricating loyalty narratives, and burying the truth under judicial repression.
International filmmakers and artists: Stand with your Iranian colleagues now. Do not let the Islamic Republic cover up mass murder and silence dissent through threats, fake banners, and sham prosecutions.
