Kambiz Roshanravan (June 9, 1949, Tehran, Iran)
Kambiz Roshanravan was born in Tehran on June 9, 1949.
He graduated from the National Conservatory of Music in Tehran, received B.A degree in music from Tehran University and M.M degree in music composition from the University of Southern California (U.S.C).
He has also received the First Grade Artistic Certificate from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in Tehran which is the highest artistic certificate in Iran.
As a composer Roshanravan has written many compositions including, music for children and young adults, chamber and symphonic music, folk and traditional based music for various ensembles as well as film scores and music for educational purposes.
Notably he has established a new national tonal music style with harmony using quarter and microtone intervals. In his orchestration he combines Iranian traditional instruments and style with western instruments and techniques.
So far 35 of his compositions have been produced in record, cassette tape and CD forms. His music is among so called “National Music”.
Among his vast output of music, symphony no.1 (Falak-ol-Aflak) was premiered by Tehran Symphony Orchestra, Ascension symphonic poem for symphony orchestra, Iranian instruments, singer and reciter was premiered in London by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Ahoo for string orchestra was premiered by Virtioso Orchestra in Toronto and Asrar-E-Azal for acappella choir commissioned and premiered by the Netherland Chamber Choir in Harlem and Amsterdam in summer 2009.
Roshanravan has received many prizes for his compositions including: first departmental composition award from U.S.C, best film music prizes for motion pictures: Doleto, Chrysanthemum, Birth of a Butterfly, Victorious Warrior, Prisoner 707 and Forever Kids.
He was also awarded the prize for the best symphonic music composition Falak-ol-Aflak on the theme of Iran-Iraq War.
He has published many articles about different aspects of music in Iranian journal and periodicals. He is the author of three volume book “Comprehensive Applied Harmony”.
So far three of his musical scores: Falak-ol-Aflak Symphony, Ascension Symphonic Poem and Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra have been published.
With cooperation of Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO in Japan he introduced an Iranian traditional instrument (Tombak) in the Video of Musical Instruments of Asia and Pacific which was published in the spring of 1995.
His compositions have been widely heard, recorded and performed in Iran and other countries such as: England, Netherland, Austria, USA, Canada, Germany, China, Japan, France and Switzerland.
Roshanravan has given numerous lectures about different aspects of music in universities, research centers, artistic and cultural institutes such as: Middle East Study Association (MESA), Dec 1999, Washington D.C, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London University, Feb 2003, Management Faculty, Tehran University, Oct 2003, Andisheh Cultural Centre, Sep 2003, University of Medical Science, May 2003, Shiraz University, June 2004, Roodaki hall, Oct 2006, Vahdat hall, Nov 2007 and University of British Columbia, Jan 2010.
He has composed 117 film music scores and is the only Iranian film composer who has been elected by the British Film Institute and being introduced in the book “World of the Cinema” (Dairy of a Day), published in 1995.
He is founder member of Iranian Association of Film Composers, Iran House of Music and Iranian Artists Forum.
He has been invited and participated in numerous Iranian music festivals and events in capacity of juror and has been director of the 22nd, 23rd and 24th Fadjr International Music Festivals from 2006 to 2008 held in Tehran.
