Abolfazl Jalili _{(June 5 or 26, 1957, Saveh, Iran)}

Born on June 5, 1957 in Saveh, Abolfazl Jalili was involved in Arts as a painter and calligrapher. Then he bought an 8mm camera and experienced filmmaking.

He entered the Iranian College of Dramatic Arts in order to learn cinema academically. However, he left the college and went to Iranian TV to make children films.

Abolfazl Jalili has always been a controversial figure in the Iranian cinema for his experiences in film language and aesthetics. While most of his films have been praised in international film festivals, they have been censored and never screened in his country Iran.

“At 6, I was singing out my love of song. But, coming from a religious family, I was not allowed to pursue my passion. At 8, I was drawing beautiful portraits thanks to my love of graphic art. But, coming from a religious family, I was not allowed to pur-sue my passion. At 10, I was busy taking photographs. But, coming from a religious family, I was not allowed to pursue my passion. At 16, I fell in love with the cinema and resisted opposition from my family. My 8mm camera has accompanied me ever since.”

Jalili has made 15 films so far, none of which have been approved for public release in Iran. In a conversation with Deutsche Welle, Jalili said that he agrees with the legal censorship of films, but he does not consider censorship in the Islamic Republic of Iran to be legal. Jalili's films are non-commercial and usually deal with social issues, especially youth problems.

In the 1970s, Abolfazl Jalili began making documentaries. He then went on to direct his first feature film, ‘Scabies (La Gale)’, winning numerous awards at international festivals.

His 1994 film "G Means Girl" has won two awards from Venice and Nantes Film Festivals 1995. Some of his outstanding films are: Scabies, Dorna (1990), A True Story, and Dance of Dust.
